Upcoming Poetry Reading - Myrna Pierce Sandik

Myrna will be at the library Friday, Sept. 7 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM. She will be reading poetry from her book RFD Iowa. The beauty of poetry is its ability to create not only images, but smells, sounds, emotions in only a few words. Her poem Revisiting the Old Barn conjures the feeling of isolation and comfort, the smells of dust and old hay. It takes back to a pleasant place and time. One of my favorite poems, Snowfall in the Afternoon by Robert Bly, creates a wonderful, unique feeling you can only get on those winter afternoons when the sky turns grey and the snow just begins to fall:

Snowfall in the Afternoon

The grass is half-covered with snow.
It was the sort of snowfall that starts in late afternoon
And now the little houses of the grass are growing dark.

If I reached my hands down near the earth
I could take handfuls of darkness!
A darkness was always there which we never noticed.

As the snow grows heavier the cornstalks fade farther away
And the barn moves nearer to the house.
The barn moves all alone in the growing storm.

The barn is full of corn and moves toward us now
Like a hulk blown toward us in a storm at sea;
All the sailors on deck have been blind for many years.

What is you favorite poem or poet?

THE BEE is not afraid of me,
I know the butterfly;
The pretty people in the woods
Receive me cordially.

The brooks laugh louder when I come,
The breezes madder play.
Wherefore, mine eyes, thy silver mists?
Wherefore, O summer’s day?
